Why I became a copywriter
Hello again! Since our last chat, I hope you’ve put some thought into why you’re interested in copywriting.
So what’s the reason? Really, I want to know!
If you’re comfortable doing this, post your why in the comments and we can all read each other’s motivations.
Okay, moving on to my why…
If you know my story already, feel free to skip to the next section, because I’m telling it again. ☺
When I was 41, my ex-husband and I found out we were having another baby. Shocker!
I had two boys in middle school at the time. But with the blessing of my ex, I quit my job as a teacher to stay home and raise our baby boy. I couldn’t have been happier. Kids grow up FAST and I wanted to cherish every moment I could with our baby.
Just look at this sweet little thing 💕
Being a mom is my biggest joy. The compliment I get the most is that I’m pretty good at it. There are times when my boys might disagree with this statement, but hey, we’re all human, right?
My income as a teacher stopped in August of 2015 and my youngest son was born the following month. Even before his birth, I began to feel the stress and pressure of losing that income. And although my husband (at the time) agreed to us giving up my salary, I could tell he was beginning to resent it – and me.
Our marriage became extremely difficult. I maxed out my credit cards by buying things like formula and diapers.
But I still wanted to stay home, and I knew I could find a way to do it. So I started researching ways to work from home.
That’s when I discovered copywriting. What I liked most about copywriting was that I could do the projects on my time. As long as I delivered the final product by its deadline, it didn’t matter if I worked on it at 8 am or 2 am.
I could set my own schedule.
I took a few courses, stumbled across a few freelancing job sites, and I was hooked. To think, someone would pay me money for what was in my head? Fantastic!
I didn’t need a website or product to sell. All I needed was the ability to write. I had that.
The money wasn’t much in the beginning. I spent a lot of time reading, researching, and taking classes – both free and paid.
It wasn’t easy with two active teens and a baby. But my why was strong enough that I kept going.
And that’s a really good thing because my life was about to take a crazy turn.
I’ll tell you more about that later this week.
For now, I’ll leave you with a couple of questions…
If you were given a topic and a little guidance, do you think you could write an article about it? What obstacles, if any, would you have?
Post your answer in the comments, or send me a note. I can’t wait to read it!
Until next time…
